White House Ruins at Canyon De Chelly

Canyon De Chelly National Monument is located in the northeast part of Arizona, in the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation. Nestled beneath a striated, gilded wall of desert varnish are the sites known as the White House Ruins, which are the most recognized Anasazi cliff dwellings in the canyon. Tina and I arrived at the canyon late afternoon and started on the 2-mile hike down the canyon wall to the White House Ruins, with the expectation of capturing the golden light. Unfortunately threatened by stormy skies, we decided to abort the hike half way down. We located a suitable spot at the rim of the canyon, which overlooked the ruins and began a lengthy wait. Finally the sunrays found its way through the clouds and illuminated the side of the canyon wall with the ruins below, and I was able to capture the shot just the way I had imagined it. I'm looking forward for our return trip to Canyon De Chelly and plan to stay for several days in order to explore more of the area.
